Since Tu Youyou received the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, her hometown, a small old town of Ningbo, Zhejiang, has attracted lots of visitors, especially parents and their kids. In fact, it’s not open to the public.
Tu received the prize for discovering artemisinin (青蒿素) ― an important kind of traditional Chinese medicine that has helped save millions of lives across the world. “Many parents go there with their children and they usually take photos in front of Tu’s house,” said a manager from a company in Ningbo.
Xu Lingfei, a visitor from Shanghai, takes her 9-year-old son to walk around the old
house. “Chinese people often have a strong feeling for famous people. So taking kids to visit famous people’s old house is a common way to encourage them to study harder,” said Xu. In fact, something similar happened after Mo Yan received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2012. Plenty of tourists kept visiting Mo’s old house in Gaomi, Shangdong.
